Design<\/p>\n<p>Murray Walker:-<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026\u2026\u2026.One of these uncompromising and furiously clever individuals who is a gentle, cultured and thoroughly approachable human being is Gordon Murray \u201c<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The A&amp;R considers that Colin Chapman\u2019s design career in FI embraced two periods:-<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>From the inception of Lotus cars to the late 1960\u2019s early 1970\u2019s<\/li>\n<li>The mature period covering the wings\/ ground effect and turbo era until his sad and early death in 1982<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We don\u2019t know what he might have achieved had he lived beyond this.<\/p>\n<p>The FI designs of Colin Chapman were considerable not least because of his relatively low budget .He did not have the resources of a multinational to cross-subsidize its racing programme against publicity and a means of developing its engineers.<\/p>\n<p>In order to evaluate Colin Chapman better the A&amp;R is committing to a series of benchmarking exercises analyzing the design achievements of his peers.<\/p>\n<p>These design studies are a natural complement to our series on Design Heroes that gives priority to Industrial and Product Designers.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon Murray is one of the greatest performance and diverse application transport designer of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> &amp;21<sup>st<\/sup>. century.He has displayed extraordinary talent across the broadest range conceivable being a designer, race strategist and consultant.<\/p>\n<p>He will probably be recorded as one of a handful of the greatest car designers of all time.<\/p>\n<p>He has displayed the highest level of technological, aesthetic and sculptural qualities in his design.<\/p>\n<p>He has been compared with Colin Chapman and in many respects this is deserved.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon Murray was born in 1946 and is 74 years old in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Designers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We offer the list below and would be interested to hear from our Steve Nichols was the chief designer)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McLaren_MP4\/5\">McLaren MP4\/5<\/a> (1989)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>McLaren Cars from wiki:-<\/h2>\n<p>From 1991 to 2004, Murray headed the offshoot <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McLaren_Cars\">McLaren Cars<\/a> team to design road-going supercars: the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McLaren_F1\">McLaren F1<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercedes-Benz_SLR_McLaren\">Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Gordon Murray Design<\/h2>\n<p>In July 2007 the Gordon Murray Design consultancy was established, and released initial details regarding its upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/T.25\">T.25<\/a> (Type 25) prototype <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/City_car\">city car<\/a> along with mention of a future lightweight, economical supercar project.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gordon_Murray#cite_note-10\"><sup>[10] <\/sup><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gordon_Murray#cite_note-11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> The T25 will be smaller than a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smart_Fortwo\">Smart Fortwo<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gordon_Murray#cite_note-12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a> In November 2009 Gordon Murray Design and Zytek Automotive announced plans to develop an electric-powered version, the T.27.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gordon_Murray#cite_note-13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On 17 November 2008 Gordon Murray won the &#8216;Idea of the Year&#8217; accolade at Autocar magazine&#8217;s annual awards ceremony for the manufacturing process proposed for the T.25.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gordon_Murray#cite_note-14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The car, dubbed T27, will be the product of a partnership between Murray&#8217;s company and British technology company <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zytek\">Zytek<\/a>, which will build the powertrain.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gordon_Murray#cite_note-15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A celebration of 50 years of Murray&#8217;s involvement in the car industry was held called One Formula. Every one of Murray&#8217;s F1 designs was on display along with the McLaren F1 road car and examples from his personal car collection, along with hundreds of rock band T-shirts that Murray had amassed over the years.<sup> [<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Citation_needed\"><em><sup>citation needed<\/sup><\/em><\/a><sup>]<\/sup> The book <em>One Formula &#8211; 50 years of car design<\/em> details Murray&#8217;s designs.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gordon_Murray#cite_note-16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Other projects<\/h2>\n<p>In 1981, Murray was involved in improvements for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Midas_Cars\">Midas Cars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:LCC_Rocket.jpg\">&lt;img alt=&#8221;&#8221; src=&#8221;\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/5\/55\/LCC_Rocket.jpg\/220px-LCC_Rocket.jpg&#8221; decoding=&#8221;async&#8221; width=&#8221;220&#8243; height=&#8221;106&#8243; class=&#8221;thumbimage&#8221; data-file-width=&#8221;1926&#8243; data-file-height=&#8221;927&#8243;&gt;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" height=\"106\" class=\"wp-image-3507\" src=\"http:\/\/colinchapmanmuseum.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/word-image-10.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light_Car_Company\">Light Car Company<\/a> &#8216;Rocket&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Murray independently designed the <em>Rocket<\/em>, an ultra-lightweight, open cockpit roadster powered by a 1-litre motorcycle engine, which has an appearance similar to that of a 60&#8217;s era Grand Prix car. Looking like a single-seater, it could accommodate a passenger in tandem with the driver, the second seat located beneath a removable cover. The <em>Rocket<\/em> was built by former racing driver <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chris_Craft_(racing_driver)\">Chris Craft<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light_Car_Company\">Light Car Company<\/a>. A vechicle hailed by the industry as a holistic design concept breathtaking in its clarity of purpose\u201d [quote from D.Nye in \u201cDriving Ambition\u201d 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Considered by many as the ultimate road going sports car- a tour-de-force.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe F1 will be remembered as one of the great events in the history of the car\u201d Autocar.<\/p>\n<p>It was hugely uncompromised but it was hugely expensive as a result.<\/p>\n<p>From the net:-<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gordon_Murray\">Gordon Murray<\/a>, designer of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McLaren_F1\">McLaren F1<\/a> (which for many years was the fastest production car ever built) said the following about the Bugatti Veyron in UK auto magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Evo_Magazine\"><em>Evo<\/em><\/a> during its development period:<\/p>\n<p>The most pointless exercise on the planet has got to be this four-wheel-drive thousand-horsepower Bugatti. I think it&#8217;s incredibly childish this thing people have about just one element &#8211; top speed or standing kilometre or 0\u201360. It&#8217;s about as narrow minded as you can get as a car designer to pick on one element. It&#8217;s like saying we&#8217;re going to beat the original Mini because we&#8217;re going to make a car 10mph faster on its top speed &#8211; but its two\u00a0foot longer and 200 kilos heavier. That&#8217;s not car designing &#8211; that just reeks of a company who are paranoid&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014Gordon Murray <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bugatti_Veyron#cite_note-95\"><sup>[95]<\/sup><\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank Stephenson writing in <em>Form and Function <\/em>observed:-<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was designed to be <em>tight, and<\/em> I think that\u2019s a common factor in the really great supercars. They\u2019re more believable if they are less <em>styled <\/em>.Like military aircraft \u2013nobody comes in and tries to make them look beautiful, they just try to make them perform in the best possible way. Of Chapman he stated:-<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChapman was not only a design genius but also an inspirational leader, a supreme motivator and an ingenious and gifted business man who was always prepared to walk closer to the line of acceptable ethics than most of his peers.<\/p>\n<p>He was possessed of an extraordinarily clear, analytical mind, a ferocious impatient spirit and an unbelievably good memory\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>Tough and demanding, ruthless and impatient, and willing to cut corners to satisfy his enormous ambitions, Colin Chapman had a greater influence on racing car design than anyone else in the history of Formula 1.For my money ,despite his shortcomings ,he was a real hero\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026<em> he was a flawed hero but a hero none the less\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Other assessments include:-<\/p>\n<p>Haskell:-<\/p>\n<p>\u201cat the time of writing the most successful racing car designer is Gordon Murray of McLaren and formerly of Brabham whose designs have dominated F1 for a dec\\de winning multiple consecutive Constructors Championships\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Had idolised Chapman and the Lotus cars he designed. That was Murray\u2019s idea. The Brabham BT46B fan car? That was his. The drag-lite McLaren MP4\/4, the car with the highest win percentage in the history of the sport?
